From Hacking to Duping
The days of hacking are over when the hacker used to wrack his brains to match the log in name with the password.

Enter…Duping! Today the hacker wants to take it easy. He doesn’t want to wrack his brains. So, what does he do? He sends you a message purportedly from “Yahoo” which reads as follows:

I received the above mail alert today which has purportedly been sent by Yahoo. It has all the trappings of an original message from the hosts of the Yahoo site. But, what alerted me was the reply address: vzeot7ta@verizon.net

How can the reply to a Yahoo mail to one of its users be diverted to a personal address. Whoever the owner “vzeot7ta@verizon.net” is, he is quite smart. But, people like him or her can be smart only if you are not smarter.

Now, if you aren’t a little careful, you may respond to it by furnishing your name, password, date of birth and country or territory. By doing that you would not only give him free access to your account but also let him reactivate your account in case it is closed by Yahoo because he has all the information he needs to do that. And, you are the only who gave him all the details so naively.

So, if you receive a similar mail, you know what to do. Don’t respond to it. There is a ‘delete’ button on your keyboard. Just press that and delete the message.

The one person who is most well equipped to save your e-mail account is: YOU! So, be smart and do not be DUPED!

Arvind,
Thanks so much for showing so much of generosity. It is much appreciated. But, Man, I never asked for a share.

In the past two years, I have received atleast 20-25 mails claiming I have won millions and millions- from Microsoft, Coca Cola, Google and Yahoo.

Once even from a bank too asking for my details...lol..

Chitraparna,
I hope you did not respond to any of them. Actually, those mails are designed to hook gullible netizens and once you get hooked they may ask for an entry fee or something.

But, this one is different. This is an ingenious method of hacking your account with your help. That is dangerous.

Chitraparna,

I would like to add one more thing to what Omana has said.

As I said, in this case, you not only provide details for accessing your account but also pass on the information he needs to restore your account if it is closed by Yahoo.

Some malicious mails are so designed, that when you click them open they attach to each of your contacts. People who receive them think that its you who sent it, coz the sender address is yours. I had faced a similar problem which was very emabrassing. There are other e-mails which request bank a/c info claiming to deposit a large amount into it of which a certain % will be given to us!!!!

Usha,
I had a similar experience about three years ago when I opened a mail and the mail got delivered to everyone in my address list.
I can understand your embarrassment.
I have also received a couple of mails in the evening from friends whom I had met in the afternoon saying they have rushed off to some place and lost the money and wanted me to transfer some 2,500 US dollars through Western Union Money Transfer.

Jevi,
Thanks for your compliment. I thought it was my duty to inform the internet users and Yahoo about this. That is why I wrote this blog within 15 minutes of reading the e-mail.
