No Munna Bhai for Lucknow
The candidature of Samajwadi Party’s nominee for Lucknow constituency in Uttar Pradesh, cine star Sanjay Dutt, went for a toss when the Supreme Court rejected the actor’s plea to suspend his conviction and sentence under the Arms Act in 1993 Mumbai serial blast case in order to facilitate his contesting the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Supreme Court bench which included Chief Justice of India, K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice R.M. Lodha ruled that “In view of the serious offence for which he has been convicted by the Special Judge, we are not inclined to suspend the conviction and sentence awarded by the special judge in the present case.”

Sanjay’s counsel, Harish Salve, argued that Snjay is a well know cine artiste with a huge fan following and that Sanjay’s father late Sunil Dutt had also been a famous actor before he entered politics and that Dutt is neither habitual criminal no has he been involved in any other case.”

While the judges acknowledged the contribution of Sanjay Dutt as an artist, they ruled that “despite all these favourable circumstances, we do not think it is a fit case where conviction and sentence could be suspended so that the bar under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act will not operate against him.”

“Law prohibits any person who has been convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years from contesting the election and such person shall be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release,” declared the judges adding that the court’s power to say the conviction to enable a convict to contest “shall be exercised only under exceptional circumstances.”

The bottom line is: Sanjay Dutt cannot contest the Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow this time. That is his ‘luck’ for ‘now’!

Munna Bhai may be able to do anything in “reel” life but it must have dawned on him that it is quite a different story when it comes to Sanju Baba in real life!

Way to go....if the SC keeps up this level of law enforcement,I am sure, there will be some sort of trust and faith build among the public on the law of the land.

Our courts have always shown some spine on issues like these where politicians have always floundered.

High time the other politicians with such background be ruled out from contesting elections.Sanju Baba please realise you can't wash your hands off the wrong you have done,by being a politician.Politics is not a family business. You need to know what Community Service is to be a good politician, not by just doing a movie on Gandhiji.

Now its time for people like Pappu Yadav,to face similar consequences. Its sad that a country which has some of the best brains, has uneducated criminal politicians to lead the nation.

When people are losing faith with judiciary, this is a right decision and this proves the judiciary system still exists and it is not biased.
What about another criminal Azharuddin? He cheated the entire nation by fixing the matches. Are all Dawood’s aids are contesting in this election from various partys.

Its a good judgment given by the supreme court, good for the country. Now, since the judiciary has done its job well, the voters of Lucknow should act responsibly. I am sure now Sanjay Dutt would make his wife Manyata to stand in election from Lucknow. People of Lucknow should not elect her because ultimately Sanjay would govern in the name of his wife.

Chintan,
Manayata is not being offered the Lucknow seat. It Jaya Bacchan who is being considered for the seat.

It shows still Law prevails in our Country.

The Best Decision the SC could have ever taken.

It is a slap on the faces of Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav...for selecting him as their candidate.

They think they can show a Movie Star ...in front of people and fool people ... Gandhigiri can work they thought...

But in the end ...Law,Consititution has prevailed.Hats off to the Architects of our Constitution.

Kudos to Supreme Court.

Manishkumar,
You are right. The law has prevailed. Otherwise, the politician think they can do anything and get away with it.

What is court doing about most of the politicians running for elections in UP...a large number of them have a long history of criminal cases which includes murder, attempted murder, rioting etc are they less criminal than Sanjay?

The supreme court made a very good decision. It's high time we stop having politicians with criminal records. Sanjay Dutt might have conducted himself well during his stay in the jail but the 1993 blasts had a very bad influence on our people. The supreme court should press charges against other politicians holding several criminal records..

Sanju Baba, you are a good actor. Remain to that industry alone. You have been convicted for a really big offense. You might have reformed but your past deeds will haunt you in the future. Even if the court gives you relief first become a corporator, then an MLA and then get elected to the Lok Sabha. If you want to make a difference work with the people, help them achieve their goals. First show your credentials as a social reformer and then begin your political carrier.

It’s a very good decision. Sanjay Dutt is not going to contest elections but what about other cine stars who will represent the people in parliament? They don’t have even the knowledge of MPLAD fund. They can distribute “bakhshish” among the people but didn’t have any plan to spent the money allotted to them for people’s welfare.
