As the political fallout of the Mumbai terror attacks began, the Home Minister Shivraj Patil had to go. He seems to have exhausted all the nine lives of the proverbial cat.
An agitated Congress president Sonia Gandhi declared: “One thing we do know…we can no longer sit back and let these attacks overwhelm us.” She called for immediate and decisive action at political, administrative and local levels.
Party General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi, described the terror attacks as a slap on the face of the government. Cornered from all sides, Shivraj Patil offered his resignation owning moral responsibility for the lapses.
P. Chadambaram, who was the internal security minister under Rajiv Gandhi, has been named the new home minister. The prime minister Man Mohan Singh has taken over the finance portfolio.
The Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh may be the next to go. The fact that he led his son Ritesh Deshmukh and Bollywood film director Ram Gopal Verma on a disaster tourism of the Taj hotel has not gone down well with anyone.
The insensitive and casual remarks by the deputy chief minister and home minister of Maharashtra, R.R. Patil, to the effect that these things happen in big cities of did nothing to help the situation. Why should R.R. Patil continue after this?
The National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan’s resignation has not been accepted as of now. But, the UPA is apparently courting Brijesh Mishra, the former NSA under the National Democratic Alliance government who came out openly in support of the nuclear deal. Other bureaucrats who might be on the line of fire may be the Intelligence Bureau chief and home secretaries.
Scoring political points, the Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy described Shivraj Patil’s resignation as too little and too late. Ascribing the reason for the attack as a result of collective negligence of central government, he said it must go.
One wishes he spoke the same language when the Indian Parliament was attacked; when the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 was hijacked; when the Akshardham temple was attacked. The National Democratic Alliance government did not quit. The home minister, L.K. Advani, did not offer to resign. In fact, he went on to become the deputy prime minister.
I am trying justify anything. I am not speaking for anyone. But, such double talk must come to an end. If the government needs to go, the people will vote them out in the forthcoming elections. But, at least for now, help the government deal with the situation instead of finding faults with everything it is doing. We cannot change the government every time there is a terrorist attack.
We did not elect the opposition members to become a stumbling block for the ruling coalition. We did not elect them as opposition members. We elect every member to rule our motherland. If a party fails to win sufficient number of seats to occupy the treasury benches, it is their fault. For heaven’s sake don’t keep finding faults with everything that is happening.
You have to play a constructive role in nation building. Not a negative role as you are doing now. Your payments are also coming from the tax players’ money just as the members occupying the treasury benches. So, please give us our money’s worth.
In a democratic set up Janta have all rights & power but while using it they go for Cast,Religion,Region, creed, nepotism, race nd other ghstly facinating approaches. So keeping their(Janta)considerations in mind they (elected one ) abuses the power. And results come out as Riot, terrosist attack,Scam(ghotala)& consiparacy against its own motherland and blood.
If these elected are abusing your faith they are right in their approach because you provoke them to do so otherwise people do meet the same fate as a rapist got in Nagpur court primises.
We are the people always have double standard and habit of double speak. We critise Batala house accident and appreciate action against Pragya. We do critical to demolition of mosque ,churches but never come out when temple is destroyed. After all these is our own which as as dear as our life.We never come out with one voice that we have to kill the evil and route cause of terrorism and corruptin.
So don’t get emotional. If we really want a nice, defined, pro humanity environment than please
Let us all wake up and make them feel that we are against of any misdeed which is against the humanity.
Jai Hind.
Would you please enlighten me on which temple has been destroyed after 1947 and by which community?
Actually recentment starts when one have double standard or parametre.I have visited many countries and observed that they do deveopment work but execute only after gaing the respect and confidence of each faith.Transparent action always be holy.
My experience— you know that I am basically a student of archaeology. We visited world known famous temple of Dwarka. In this temple people of other faith is not allowed. But this temple required some conservation at that time say early 80s.Dr.W.A.Sidiqqi was with us as a senior departmental archaeologist.Orthodoxed opposed some peoples entry. But for your surprise orthodox agreed with the logic of Dr.Sidiqqui.He just told that temple is humane (classical texts describes temple as man form)and it is sick,it needs an urgent attention failing which it will collapse. What you will do with sick,he asked the gathering?People replied we will bring doctor for treatment.Than he told think in that way.We are the doctor, want to treat the sick .Everybody convinced and we carried out conservation work.
So we have to be fair and win the trust.
Hope you are fine.
I totally agree with you that everybody should be treated equal and there should be no appeasement. However, the problem with our eyes is that they can see the whole world but they cannot see themselves.
If a religious structure has to be brought down for a logical reason or for a project involving national interest such as construction of roads, flyovers, bridges, dams etc., the religion or religious denomination to whom the structure belongs should not be a consideration. However, it places huge responsibilities on the shoulders of the incumbent government to ensure that projects are not drawn up with the ulterior motive of dismantling a religious structure for whatever reasons. And, this should be followed in letter and spirit without discrimination. Also, when a legal structure is brought down for such a purpose the community needs to be sufficiently compensated and also provided an alternate site in the vicinity to raise a similar structure.
Coming to the point of equality, I would like to raise two points purely from the academic point of view.
I cannot speak for other religions but I think that every church is built on a legally acquired piece of land and the church would be in possession of the documents of its legal ownership and receipts for payments made by it. Can you say that of all the religious structures that exist in India. If an illegal religious structure is brought brought down members of that religion must have the magnanimity to acknowledge this. But, this never happens. So, who is being appeased?
The other thing is, you yourself cited the example of how an eminent archaeologist of Dr. W.A. Sidiqqi’s standing was being prevented from entering the temple of Dwarka even for the purpose of conservation. If my knowledge serves me right, there are only a couple of religions that discriminate between individuals; there are only a couple of religions that prevent people belonging to other faith and other denominations of the same faith from entering their temples. As far as I know, the temples of all other faiths welcome people from other faiths with open arms. So, the religious heads of these religions need to do some introspection and change things. A man should not be allowed to prevent the entry of another man into the temple when god has no problems. If we cannot have equality in the twentyfirst century, we may never be able to have it.
I don’t mean that the change will turn everything around. P Chidambaram is himself exhausted by the economic crisis...
But yes it was necessary because Patil was a remarkably passive man whose mere appearance was enough to dishearten everyone. He even lost the elections and became a minister only due to his sycophancy towards ”The Family”...
Let’s hope PC would at least infuse some enthusiasm if nothing else...
Usually, such a change of guard would make no difference as we have seen in the past. But, this time the magnitude of the attack is so vast that things just have to change. This is a watershed. So, this had better be a turning point.
I don’t really think Patil deserves so much sympathy. The fact that he is a sycophant became clear in his statements made as reply to criticisms in previous blasts.
Why do you think a person who lost election was given such an important post?
I am not questioning your wisdom. I have watched him for a long time and he commands my respect as a person. I acknowledge that he failed as a home minister. A feel sorry to say this but we do not have too many politicians in India with integrity. I think that is what got him the portfolio not sychophancy. I will not argue with you if you hold a different view. But, this is my considered opinion. I would not stick out my neck for many other politicians.
Thanks for sharing so much of information.
